Headlines

  • There have now been 114,332 deaths worldwide
  • There are currently 1,857,115 confirmed cases worldwide
  • The UK yesterday passed 10,000 deaths (10,621) with a further 746 deaths
  • 23 health workers, that we know of, have died with Covid-19 related illnesses
  • Health workers continue to work without adequate PPE
  • 12,776 people were tested yesterday (there were more tests than this as some people are tested more than once)
  • There have been a total of 282,374 people tested in the UK amounting to 0.42% of the population
  • The UK now has the 4th highest number of deaths in Europe (behind Italy, Spain and France)
  • The UK is the 5th highest per 100,000 population in Europe (Belgium is the other country not listed above)
  • The UK is not, as some media claim, the worst in Europe, but it is amongst the worst. Moreover, this is not explained in terms of either population size or the point of the cycle different countries have reached.
  • The UK is 3rd in Europe for deaths per day since first death reported (only Italy and Spain are ahead)
  • The UK has had 272 deaths per day since the first death on March 5th
  • Germany which introduced rigorous testing and a much earlier lockdown has had 86 deaths per day since their first death on March 9th
  • Germany has had 3.66 deaths per 100,000 population compared to the UK's 16.13
  • Germany spends, prior to this crisis, on €4,271 per person per year on healthcare compared to the UK's €3,566

Quote of the day

"I have many GPs ringing me fearful not only for themselves but also their families whom they are returning home to. But also practice nurses who are particularly being placed at risk.  What is also worrying is that they all said they couldn't speak out as they were worried about their jobs. Now is not the time for that. That shouldn't be an issue.  Nurses are having to dress patients who have leg ulcers, who require bloods being taken; they are constantly at risk as are patients as there aren't enough masks to go around."
Dr George O'Neill, chair of the West Belfast Federation of GPs
