Headlines

  • There have now been 128,972 deaths from Covid-19 worldwide
  • There are now 2,024,675 confirmed cases worldwide
  • The UK Government have come under increased pressure at their failure to include care home deaths in their total. No other country in Europe is systematically excluding some deaths.
  • Total deaths in the UK are now 12,868 (official) and closer to 14,225 (if non-hospital deaths are included)
  • Somewhere between 761 (official) and 841 (adjusted figure) people died in the UK yesterday from Covid-19
  • At least 32 NHS workers have died from Covid-19 since March (their names are listed below)
  • It is now 41 days since the first Covid-19 death was recorded in the UK and 60 days since the first European death in France

  • Wales continues to have a higher increase in daily deaths (15%) than England (6%), Scotland (7%) or Northern Ireland (8%)

The UK Government continue to regard themselves as having led a successful campaign against the virus This despite all the evidence suggesting otherwise The death rate continues to rise, whilst the PM tells us that the peak has been reached Meanwhile, there are now over 3 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 worldwide In the UK there are 171,253 confirmed cases But, this excludes all the people who have not been tested and have the virus In particular this means that older people in care homes, those most at risk of dying, are not being counted And, in case we forget (the media have moved on) despite the claps and the charity singles health workers continue to work without adequate PPE And the result of this is that more and more of them are contracting the virus and a small but significant number of them are dying The UK government, under some pressure, has finally agreed to include all deaths in the daily totals. There are now a lot of statistics flying about and this is causing a lot of confusion. Let me try to pick through this. The Government use deaths in hospital only. These are issued on a daily basis but are not, for technical reasons, the number of deaths in the last 24 hours as they have been widely reported in the press. The figure as of yesterday, today's figure has not been put on their website, is 20,732. The figure does not include deaths in care homes or deaths at home. Every Tuesday the ONS release data on place of death. Last week that data indicated that around 20% of deaths from Covid-19 were not occurring in hospitals. Adding that proportion to the hospital figure gives a total of 24,710. Meanwhile, the FT using daily death certificate data plus a model based on excess deaths compared to the previous 5 years, give us a figure of 41,102.
